Revival of Denizli's Historic Period
Pamukkale University takes scientific responsibility for excavation works at İlbade Cemetery, supported by Denizli Municipality and lead by Directorate of Denizli Museum.
Pamukkale University takes scientific responsibility for excavation works at İlbade Cemetery, supported by Denizli Municipality and lead by Directorate of Denizli Museum. During the excavation works, artifacts continue to shed light on the history of the Turkish Period. Many tombs were discovered under the ruins; walls around the cemetery are built and landscaping studies is made at this area.
Denizli Municipality, Pamukkale University and Museum Directorate continues excavation, restoration works and landscaping at İlbade Cemetery, which is very important in terms of Turkish History.
Mayor Osman Zolan and Prof. Dr. Kadir Pektaş faculty member of the Department of Art History, Faculty of Arts have examined excavation works on site. They also visited tomb of Mehmet Gazi.
After examination Mayor pointed out the importance of cemetery for Turkish Nation. During the Ottoman, Seljuk and Republican periods, İlbade Cemetery was used as Turkish Cemetery.
There are buried many spiritual leaders, who served Denizli. This is a cemetery which is rare in Anatolia. Many tombstones were discovered under the ruins within the framework of excavation works, begun by Denizli Municipality 5 years ago. Places of tombstones were found and broken ones were repaired. We have begun this study in order to shed light on the history. There were difficulties in the construction of the wall of the cemetery. Destroyed walls will be rebuilt soon. Works will be continued in order to get to know about our ancestors. One year later people will have opportunity to visit our ancestors. We must protect this place'.
Prof. Dr. Pektaş conveyed information about studies, which were begun 5 years ago. Approximately 8000 inventories of gravestones of Ottoman and Beylikler Periods were registered. In addition many tombs were discovered. Another part of studies is to glue the broken stones. We will continue to shed light on the history of Denizli history. Within this study, we are aiming to prepare projects in order to restore and protect of tombs.'
İlbade Cemetery is located in İlbade District of Denizli. Cemetery is surrounded by walls, built from rubble stones. The final form was made in 18th century. Some grovestones have been used for building of walls the height of 1741 meters.
Tombs of respected people like Mehmet Gazi, Dervish Ali Yahya and Shirvani and Yediler Tomb, which is outside the cemetery are located here.
İlbade Cemetery an invaluable importance for the history of the Turkish Period. There are thousands of tombstones of variety of form, decoration and features of font.
