16.03.2017

Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Assembly held the 5th meeting of March. At the meeting, Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Osman Zolan, AK Party Group Vice President Halil Pekdemir, CHP Group Vice President Mustafa Çalıkıca, and MHP Group Vice President Yusuf Garip discussed the cancellation of Denizli-Almelo sister city agreement. Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Assembly has decided in unanimity to cancel the sister city protocol made with Almelo city of the Netherlands because of the  attitudes and behavior of Nederland government that violates the human rights and freedoms towards our Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Family and Social Policy Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya and the Turkish citizens.

Cancellation decision

Following the commissioning of Denizli-Almelo's sister city agreement, it was accepted as follows: ''During the 400 years of strong and friendly relations between Turkey and the Netherlands, many cities, including local administrations have signed the sister city agreement between each other. One of them was the sister city agreement between Denizli and Almelo that reflected the friendship between our cities.

On March 11, 2017, our Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu wanted to visit the Netherlands to meet with the Turkish community and with diplomatic representatives, but his flight was not allowed without justifiable grounds. Also, the police have stopped the car of our Minister of Family and Social Policies Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, who went to Rotterdam to meet with the Turkish community, and sent her out of the country. These kind of unfortunate events were unprecedented in history, and our diplomatic citizens have been exposed to an application that disregards the norms of international law, especially the Vienna Convention.

The Dutch police attacked with dogs the Turkish citizens who were peacefully protesting in the region against the events preceding. The Turkish citizens have actually experienced the acts of violence of the Nazi era. As a response to the hostile practices of the Dutch government, the Mayor of Rotterdam has declared a state of emergency in the city. The hostile, cowardly and helpless behavior of the Dutch authorities, which emphasized their commitment to democracy and human rights, to the two ministers of a government elected and represented our country suffered a just and great reaction of the whole Turkish people.

Because of this dangerous, hostile and prejudging mentality that affected our deep-rooted diplomatic relations, the Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Assembly, on behalf of Denizli people, has decided unanimously to cancel the Denizli - Almelo sister city agreement and to end the sister city relationship.
