Gluten-free food packages delivered to recipients’ doorsteps

The Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Department of Social Services has completed its “Gluten-Free Food Support” program, launched for the second time this year for low-income residents with celiac disease who must follow a lifelong gluten-free diet. Following the assessment of applications from residents in need who have difficulty accessing costly gluten-free foods, specially prepared packages are being delivered directly to the homes of eligible recipients. The meaningful support has brought smiles to the faces of people with celiac disease while also providing significant financial relief to their families.

Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Bülent Nuri Çavuşoğlu stated that they are aware of the difficulties faced by residents with celiac disease in accessing costly specialty foods, saying, “One of our most important responsibilities is to ease the burden on our people and share in their smiles. We will continue to stand by them in the spirit of solidarity.”

What is celiac disease?

Celiac disease is an immune system reaction to gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. A genetic disorder, celiac disease damages the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients. The only known treatment for the disease is a lifelong gluten-free diet.
